Box Score
WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah smacked six doubles and scored in six of their eight turns at the plate to down Gettysburg, 10-3, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field. The Hornets got out to a 6-0 lead before the Bullets could put up three in the seventh, but the home team sealed it with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Shenandoah (25-15) got a 2-for-3 performance from junior first baseman Adam Kessel, who drove in a pair. Senior second baseman Daniel Ziccardy was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Freshman right fielder Michael Goode also had a pair of hits, and sophomore designated hitter Jasen Eberz had three RBI.
For the Bullets (23-9), senior third baseman
Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. The three hits match his career high. Freshman second baseman
Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore shortstop
Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) each had a pair of hits.
The Hornets put up single runs in the first, second and third innings. Ziccardy walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a fielding error that should have been the last out of the inning. They struck again in the second on an RBI double down the left field line by junior left fielder Josh Campbell, a feat matched by Kessel in the bottom of the third inning.
The hosts added two runs in the fifth and a single score in the seventh. Gettysburg put at least one runner on in each of the first three innings. In the top of the fifth, senior left fielder
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) led off with a single through the left side and stole second. He made it to third base on a ground out to the shortstop, but would be stranded after two more ground outs.
In the seventh inning, Gettysburg was finally able to push something across. Sophomore catcher
Pat Hanley (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) led off with a single to left, and Freeburger followed with a single to right to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a strikeout, a groundout to first base moved the runners to second and third for Backus, who scored them both with a double down the left field line. Vladyka plated Backus with a single to cut the lead to 6-3, but Shenandoah's four-run eighth put the game out of reach.
Hornets' sophomore lefty Rhys Wolford scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs over seven innings of work. He improves to 4-3. Gettysburg's
Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark Academy) gave up just the unearned run in the first and took the loss to fall to 4-5.
The Bullets will be back in action on Saturday for a senior day doubleheader against Ursinus at Kirchhoff Field. The 12:30 p.m. twin bill marks the Centennial Conference finale, and Gettysburg needs either one win or a Haverford loss to clinch a playoff spot.
