GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg took game one of a Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader with Ursinus, 4-1, before dropping the nightcap, 6-4, at Kirchhoff Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bullets clinch a playoff berth to next weekend's CC tournament.
For Gettysburg (24-10, 12-6 CC), junior center fielder
Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was 4-for-7 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored on the day. Sophomore right-hander
Chris Liegel (Oak Ridge, N.J./Pope John XXIII) picked up the complete-game win in game one, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out four. Liegel remains unbeaten this season, improving to 8-0.
The Bears (23-12, 12-6 CC) got a 4-for-7 effort with an RBI and three runs scored from sophomore first baseman David Randolph. Senior designated hitter Rob Caruso also added four hits and an RBI for Ursinus. On the hill, sophomore Mike Stangroom put together seven strong innings to earn the win in game two, allowing three runs on eight hits. He had seven strikeouts, while walking just one.
After three scoreless innings, game one saw each team tally a run in the fourth. For the Bears, a two-out Caruso triple to right center scored Randolph who reached on a single down the left field line.
The Bullets answered with a run on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back singles by senior right fielder
Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and junior catcher Michael Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston), followed by a
Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) bunt, allowed senior left fielder
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) to plate Straub on a single up the middle.
Gettysburg broke the game open with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Freshman second baseman
Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) led off the fifth by reaching on an Ursinus error. Backus advanced to second on a
Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) walk and then to third on a
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) bunt, and scored on a ground out to third by Straub.
The Bullets tallied another two runs in the sixth on three hits, pushing the lead to 4-1. That margin would remain through the seventh.
Ursinus out-hit Gettysburg, 11-9, in game two to take the nightcap, 6-4. Five different players drove in runs for the Bears. At least one run was scored by either team in every inning except the third.
Down 6-3, Gettysburg put together a run in their half of the ninth, but that would be all the closer the Bullets would get. A groundout to the shortstop by Vladyka scored Backus, who led off with a triple to center.
The Bullets will travel to Selinsgrove, Pa., to take on the Crusaders of Susquehanna on Monday afternoon. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
