Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior center fielder Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and sophomore shortstop Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored to help Gettysburg to a 7-5 win against Susquehanna in non-conference action at Bollinger Field on Monday afternoon.

Gettysburg (25-10) senior first baseman Joe Bonyai (Torrington, Conn./Hotchkiss School) and senior right fielder Chase Straub (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) each had a pair of base knocks in the 11-hit Bullet attack. Sophomore right-hander Will Kleva (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) went five innings, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, to improve to 5-2 on the season. Freshman Ryan Dwyer (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) came on to get the final out of the game for his team-high second save of the season.

The Crusaders (9-27-1) got three hits apiece from sophomore first baseman Tyler Reichard and freshman catcher Chris Price. Reichard scored twice in four at bats, and Price drove in a pair in five trips. Only two of the five runs allowed by sophomore starter Jason D'Amico were earned, but he was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1.

Susquehanna held Gettysburg off the board in the first despite an infield hit by Bonyai. The Crusaders then scored a pair of runs with the help of two Bullet errors in the bottom half. Sophomore center fielder John Lunardi hit a one-out single up the middle and stole second. Reichard then reached on a fielding error to put runners on first and third with one down. Price drove in a run with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error that also allowed Reichard to move to third base. He came home on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Brian Ahearn.

The home team would not score again until it was down 6-2, thanks to a pair of three-run innings by Gettysburg.

In the top of the third inning, freshman second baseman Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) led off with a single to center. Vladyka walked, and Bonyai hit into a fielder's choice, but Vladyka was safe at second base on a dropped throw. Straub followed with a bases-loaded walk to drive in Backus. Vladyka scored on a double play ball, and Carey singled to center to score Straub from second.

Gettysburg tacked on three more in the top of the seventh. Vladyka led off with a single through the left side, and Bonyai doubled for the ninth time this season. Following a pitching change and a pop out, sophomore catcher Pat Hanley (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) singled through the right side to drive in Vladyka. A sacrifice fly by Carey scored Bonyai, and a pair of Crusader errors loaded the bases for senior third baseman Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, Md./Parkville), who drove in a run with a walk.

An RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Susquehanna got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh, and the teams traded single scores in the eighth. Gettysburg went three-up, three-down in the top of the ninth before the hosts tried to put something together in their final at bat.

Reichard walked, but was erased when Price lined out to Vladyka, who doubled Reichard off of first base. Following a pair of walks, Dwyer came on and got freshman left fielder Don Kirkland to line out to right, ending the game.

The Bullets will close out the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to take on York (Pa.) in a single non-conference game. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
