Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Sophomore right-hander Chris Liegel (Oak Ridge, N.J./Pope John XXIII) tied the Gettysburg single-season record for most wins after picking up his ninth win on the season in a 10-8 victory over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) playoff action at Caplan Field on Friday afternoon. Liegel ties Drew Chiesa, who tallied nine victories in both 1999 and 2000.

With the win, the Bullets (26-11) tie the 2001 squad for the second most single-season victories in school history with 26. The record of 28 victories was earned by the 1988 team.

Gettysburg senior third baseman Ben Carey (Colchester, Conn./St. Bernard) and junior center fielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led the way, each recording three hits in five trips. Junior catcher Michael Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and senior left fielder Mark Campo (Arendtsville, Pa./Biglerville) each had two hits and two runs scored on the day. Campo was also one of seven Bullets to plate at least one run.

Franklin & Marshall (21-13) junior center fielder Gordon Pellegrini went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Diplomat offense. Franklin & Marshall also got two hits each from juniors Mark Minutaglio and Rich Gallugi and freshman third baseman Jason Anderson.

Gettysburg put up two runs in the top of the second for the first runs of the game. Donohue reached on a Diplomat throwing error. Two batters later, he went to second on a single to center by Campo, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Back-to-back singles by McGee and freshman second baseman Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) drove in Donohue and Campo for an early Bullet lead.

After a scoreless third, Gettysburg added six runs on eight hits in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Diplomats, however, put together three hits and two Bullet errors to cross the plate four times in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead in half. A bases-loaded fly out by Andrew Hanson drove in the first run. The next one came in on a fielding error. With two outs and a runner on second, Minutaglio homered to complete the rally. All four runs were unearned.

Gettysburg got two back in the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) led off with a walk, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and scored on a Brian Pernice (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) single to left field. Donohue then drew a free pass before Carey singled to plate Pernice for the Bullets' final run of the game. Pernice drove in three runs on the day, while scoring two.

Franklin & Marshall threatened with four more runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all the closer they would come.

The Bullets will return to action on Saturday when they face Ursinus at 12:30 p.m. The Bears defeated No. 16 Johns Hopkins, 6-3, on Friday afternoon. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship game at 12 p.m. The loser will play again at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
