GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Anne Ritter scored her first two collegiate goals while classmate Emily Harwood added a goal and an assist, leading the Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 5-2 win over Eastern Mennonite Friday afternoon at a sunny Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
The Bullets, who won their season opener for the fourth year in a row, never trailed after scoring twice over the first game's opening 10:56. Ritter scored her first goal on a deflection just 2:31 into the contest before senior Cristi Farrell punched in a shot off a direct hit into the circle eight and a half minutes later.
The Royals answered when Lauren Michel converted on a rebound midway through the opening period before Ritter restored Gettysburg's two-goal advantage when she drilled in a penalty stroke goal with 11:49 on the clock, giving her team a 3-1 halftime lead.
Harwood made it a 4-1 game when she scored just 42 seconds into the second half. Alyssa Derstine made it 4-2 when she scored for the Royals, but sophomore Lauren Woodman put the game out of reach on a deflection with 6:36 remaining.
Senior Katherine Corkhill needed to make only one save to earn the victory in goal for Gettysburg while Becky Nolt stopped seven shots for Eastern Mennonite.
The Bullets return to action on Thursday, when they host York (Pa.) College at 4:30 p.m. in another non-conference tilt back at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
