BALTIMORE – The Gettysburg College field hockey team took No. 12-ranked Johns Hopkins University into overtime, but came up on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Emily Miller scored on a breakaway just seven seconds into the extra session to lift the Blue Jays (4-1, 1-0 CC), who out-shot Gettysburg 15-12 and owned a 26-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Gettysburg (3-2, 0-1 CC) led 1-0 when junior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season with 21:23 left in the opening half on a scramble in front of the goal. The Bullets maintained their one-goal advantage heading into halftime intermission, despite facing a 12-1 deficit in corners.
The Blue Jays pulled even with 26:33 left in regulation when Leah Horton converted a penalty stroke. However, Hopkins was unable to dent Gettysburg keeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) for the remainder of regulation. Corkhill posted five of her six saves in the second half, when the Blue Jays held a 14-5 advantage in corners.
Sophia Tieu stopped nine shots in goal for the Blue Jays.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday, when it visits No. 7-ranked Lebanon Valley College at 4 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
