SALISBURY, Md. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team split its first two matches at the Salisbury University Invitational, sweeping by Richard Stockton College in three games before dropping a tight three-game decision to the host Sea Gulls on Friday night.
Gettysburg, now 9-4 overall on the season, dropped Richard Stockton easily to open the tournament, winning 30-23, 30-21, 30-16. Freshman
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) led the Bullet attack with 12 kills and added five digs, while sophomore
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) connected on 11 kills with no errors in 31 attempts (.355 attack percentage). Mercier also chipped in with 11 digs and one block.
Salisbury swept Gettysburg, but it was about as close a match as you can get as scores were 32-30, 32-30, 30-23. Senior
Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) led the attack with 10 kills, giving her 18 total knockdowns on the day. Yoder also had 18 kills over the two matches, chipping in with six against the Sea Gulls, while contributing five digs, three solo blocks, and one block assist. Mercier nearly posted another double-double with nine kills and a dozen digs in the night cap.
Sophomore setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) tallied 65 assists over the two matches with a team-high 30 digs.
The Bullets continue play at the Salisbury Invitational tomorrow (Sept. 22) with contests against Johns Hopkins University and New Jersey City University at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Although Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins are Centennial Conference members, the match is not a league contest.
