GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg scored five unanswered goals after falling behind early and the Bullets defeated their first ranked opponent of the season, topping No. 19 Franklin & Marshall 5-1 in Centennial Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Sophomore Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) led Gettysburg (5-3, 2-1 CC) with two goals while senior goalie Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made a season-high 11 saves for the Bullets.
Eileen O'Reilly gave F&M (6-2, 2-1 CC) a 1-0 lead on a rebound in the fifth minute, but sophomore Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) tied it up in the 11th minute with her second goal of the season following a penalty corner. Emala then scored what held up as the game-winner in the 17th minute, punching in the first of her two goals. Her redirected shot gave the Bullets a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Senior Cristi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made it a 3-1 with a rebounded shot in the 49th minute, and just over five minutes later, junior Anne Ritter (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) followed up a deflected goalie save with her third goal of the year. Emala provided the finishing touches in the 62nd minute, back-handing in her third goal of the year.
Jennifer Burdo saved three shots for the Diplomats, who held a 15-13 edge in shots and a 12-9 advantage in corners.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it visits No. 1-ranked Ursinus College at noon in another Centennial Conference match.
