Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior
Molly Myer (Springvale, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) spotted Gettysburg College an early 1-0 lead on the top-ranked NCAA Division III field hockey team in the country, but Ursinus College scored five unanswered goals to squash the Bullets' upset bid and pick up a Centennial Conference victory.
Gettysburg (5-4, 2-2 CC), fresh off a 5-1 victory over No. 19 Franklin & Marshall College, looked for the takedown early against the Bears and Myer delivered, scoring her first goal of the season at 11:27. That was the extent of the offense, however, as the Bullets would not find another opening for the remainder of the half.
Ursinus (7-1, 4-0 CC) was down, but not out, finding the equalizer in the 29th minute as Jennie Moore found the back of the box for her fifth goal of the season. Despite taking 15 shots and 12 penalty corners in the opening half, the Bears couldn't break the scoring column again as Bullet keeper
Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) posted 10 of her game-high 13 saves in the opening half.
The hosts came out with intention in the final period and broke the deadlock with a quick goal just 1:17 into the half. That broke the ice as Ursinus tallied three more goals over the course of the next 16 minutes, including two by Moore.
The Bears held sizeable advantages in shots (22-3) and corners (22-1).
Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and
Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) accounted for both of Gettysburg's second-half shot attempts. Moore led Ursinus with eight points on the day, adding a pair of helpers to her hat trick, while Kait Sutherland added a goal and an assist.
Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference tilt at Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m.
