YORK, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team limited No. 10-ranked York (Pa.) College to one goal in the first half, but the Spartans exploded with four second-half goals to hand the Bullets their first loss of the season, a 5-1 setback in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field.
York (2-0) struck early, as Andrew Wheeler found the back of the net in the third minute. But Gettysburg's defense and junior goalie Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) tightened things up over the remainder of the stanza, keeping York off the scoreboard to keep it a one-goal game.
The Spartans came out smoking at the start of the second period, however, scoring twice over the opening 4:38 as their lead bulged to 3-0. Sophomore Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made it a two-goal game for Gettysburg (2-1) when he drilled in a penalty kick in the 54th minute for his second goal of the season.
York put the match away with a pair of late goals, including a penalty-kick tally in the 75th minute that set the final score.
Finkel, who allowed York's first three goals, finished with one save over 58:06 of action before giving way to senior Matt Langston (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East), who played the final 31:54 and yielded the Spartans' final two goals. He was not credited with a save.
Jason Mancuso led the Spartans with two goals while Wheeler finisher with one goal and two assists. Winning goalie Kyle Marks played the opening 81:59 in goal for York but did not record a save.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it plays its home opener against the University of Mary Washington in a non-conference affair. Gametime at Clark Field is set for 7 p.m.
