GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) scored three goals en route to her first career hat trick and the Gettysburg College field hockey team used a big second half to post a 7-1 non-conference win over York (Pa.) College Thursday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Senior Sarah Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) added two assists for Gettysburg, which is now 2-0 to start the season for the fourth year in a row. York fell to 1-2.
The scoreboard read 1-1 at halftime before the Bullets erupted for six second-half goals. Gettysburg, which held a 19-2 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corners, scored all six of those goals over a 16:05 stretch from the 47th through the 63rd minutes.
The Spartans scored the game's first goal on an April McFarland tally 2:39 into the contest, but Ruth tied it up midway through the first period with her first goal of the game.
In the second half, sophomore Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) put the Bullets ahead to stay, diving to punch in a shot on a scramble following a penalty corner with 23:45 left. Senior Cristi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), junior Jenn Amols (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe), and junior Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) followed with the next three goals before Ruth drilled in her final two tallies of the afternoon.
Ruth has now scored 10 points in the team's first two games, racking up four goals and two assists.
For the second straight game, senior Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) needed to make only one save to earn the victory in goal. Claire Rekitzke stopped seven shots for York.
Gettysburg plays its third straight home game to open the season when it hosts No. 13 Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 1 p.m. back at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
