GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Christopher Newport University scored three goals over the game's opening 7:32 and the No. 13-ranked Captains handed Gettysburg their first loss of the season, topping the Bullets 4-0 in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at a sweltering Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The game marked the first-ever meeting between Gettysburg (2-1) and Christopher Newport (3-1), which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament last season.
The Captains scored on each of their first three shots of the game. Stephanie Bair put CNU on the scoreboard in the game's fourth minute with a straightaway blast just inside the circle following a penalty corner. Diana Golden made it a 2-0 game in the seventh minute when she got behind the goalie on a breakaway before Ashley Traylor converted a turnover into a goal just over a minute later, prompting a Gettysburg timeout.
The Bullet defense settled in over the remainder of the half, and senior goalie Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made all of her four saves over the final 28 minutes of the opening period.
Rhiannon Thomasson provided the finishing touches for the Captains, scoring on another corner in the 49th minute.
Sophomore goalie Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) made her collegiate debut for Gettysburg with 16:30 left and recorded one save.
