Battlefield Classic Schedule and Results
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Less than 24 hours after grinding out a five-game victory over Virginia Wesleyan College, the Gettysburg College volleyball team polished off a pair of sweeps on the second day of the Battlefield Classic. The Bullets, now 6-2 on the season, took care of business against Gallaudet University in three games 30-17, 30-28, 30-16 before sending the University of Scranton back home with another sweep 30-18, 30-22, 30-15.
Gettysburg's attack was flying high on Saturday as the team posted an attack percentage over 32 percent against its two opponents. After committing just 11 hitting errors against Gallaudet (4-4), the Bullets erred just four times against Scranton (6-2), posting an impressive attack percentage of .380 as a team. Everyone had a hand in the action with six players posting nine or more kills on the day, led by
Kristina Mercier's (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) 19, including a dozen in the finale with the Royals.
Sophomore setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) put together a fine all-around performance with 12 kills, 53 assists, and 40 digs over the two-match spread. Also chipping in offensively was freshman
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) with 15 kills and
Molly Barrett (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and
Katie Heffner (Easton, Pa./Easton) with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Serving played a key role in the match against Scranton as Gettysburg found the seams in the Royal defense a total of 15 times. Sophomore
Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) accounted for most of the damage with eight service aces, adding to an already productive match of seven kills, three assists, and 10 digs.
Defensively, Yoder had a hand in nine total blocks, while Barrett and Heffner each tallied five stuffs. Krampf led the squad in digs in each contest, tallying 22 in the former and 18 in the latter. Sophomore libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) finished with 32 digs, while Rickabaugh and Mercier tallied 24 and 21, respectively.
Elizabethtown College, which remained undefeated on the season at 7-0, also wrapped up a perfect weekend with a pair of victories, while Virginia Wesleyan, Gallaudet, Johns Hopkins University, and Messiah College each finished 3-1, the latter erasing a pair of 2-0 deficits to win a pair of matches on Saturday.
Both Gettysburg and Elizabethtown put a pair of players on the All-Tournament Team. Krampf and Mercier earned the nod for the Bullets, the former averaging just under 10 assists per game and leading the team in digs (75), and the latter totaling 33 kills and 64 digs. Stacey Wasserman and Kelly Downs represented Elizabethtown. The remaining members of the 12-person team included Brooke Winterling from Frostburg State University, Shana Lehmann from Gallaudet, Allison Cappelaere from Johns Hopkins, Leslie Heffner from Messiah, Audrey O'Donnell from Richard Stockton College, Stacey Krebs from Salisbury University, Brooke Hinkley from the University of Scranton, and Grace Geralds from Virginia Wesleyan.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thurday, Sept. 13, with the first Centennial Conference match of the season at Bryn Mawr College at 7 p.m.
