GENEVA, N.Y. – After watching William Smith pick up a pair of season-opening victories at its own tournament last weekend, the Gettysburg College women's soccer team knew the caliber of the opponent it would be facing on Saturday afternoon. The Herons lived up to the expectations, dousing the visiting Bullets with a 3-0 loss on the first day of the William Smith Heron Cup.
William Smith (3-0-0) posted easy victories over Wittenberg University (3-1) and the University of Scranton (2-0) last weekend, and didn't waste much time scoring on Gettysburg (1-2-0) as Rayza Santiago headed in a goal off a corner kick at 11:01. The Herons added another first half goal just before the buzzer, this time off the foot of Brelynn Nasypany in the 44th minute.
Gettysburg's offense was unable to mount a charge, managing just a first-half shot by freshman
Lauren Walsh (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and a second-half attempt by fellow first-year defender
Casey Harper (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City). William Smith, which held a 13-2 edge on shots, wasted little time in establishing a three-goal lead in the second half as Katelyn Tyson converted a pass from Nasypany just over three minutes into the period.
Junior goalkeeper
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) made five saves in the game for Gettysburg, including four in the second half alone. Three goalkeepers combined for one save for the hosts.
The Bullets return to action at the Heron Cup tomorrow (Sept. 9) against Union College at 11 a.m.
