GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Gettysburg College women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak come to a stop on Saturday afternoon as visiting Muhlenberg College handed the Bullets a 76-57 loss in Centennial Conference action at Bream Gymnasium. Gettysburg fell to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss, while the Mules improved to 9-3, 5-1 CC.
Junior Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) led the Bullets with a dozen points, all coming from beyond the arc. Sophomore Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and freshman Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) each picked up 11 points and six rebouds for Gettysburg, while Muhlenberg was led by Lauren Boyle, who came just one rebound shy of a triple-double with 22 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
Muhlenberg, which dropped a 71-57 decision to Gettysburg to start the conference slate back on Nov. 20, took a slim lead early on, but the Bullets came back with some clutch shooting from deep. Tied at 16 midway through the opening period, White nailed her first three-pointer of the night and following a Mule lay-up, she connected once again from beyond the arc to give the hosts a 22-18 advantage at 8:35. Boyle cut the deficit back to a bucket, but another trey by Gettysburg, this time from Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), gave the Bullets their largest lead of the night at 25-20 with 6:51 to go in the first period.
A 10-0 spurt by the Mules left Gettysburg trailing late in the stanza until White once again lit the lamp from deep, knotting the game at 32 with 1:27 on the clock. The visitors came right back with an 8-0 run to end the half, capped by a pair of free throws by Boyle.
After hitting just 33 percent of their shots in the opening 20 minutes, Gettysburg did not help its cause in the final period by hitting just 7-of-32 field goals (21.9 percent), including just 2-of-15 from three-point distance. The Mule defense held the Bullets without a field goal until White connected on her fourth three-pointer with 13:04 remaining, cutting the lead to 52-37. The lead grew to as many as 19 in the final minutes.
Muhlenberg capitalized on its size advantage in the post by out-scoring the hosts 36-16 in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 50-40. Boyle had a hand in most of the damage and finished 6-of-14 from the floor and 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Kelly McKeon added a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Sheila Cook led the reserves with 10 points.
Hartman finished the game with seven points and three steals, while sophomore Nicole Dobranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) contributed six points, nine rebounds, three steals, and three assists.
Next up for Gettysburg is another conference battle against Swarthmore College on Thursday, Jan. 17. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. from Tarble Pavilion.
