WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored a season-high 22 points and junior
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) burst off the bench for four three-pointers as the Gettysburg College women's basketball team beat McDaniel College 87-76 in a key Centennial Conference contest at the Gill Center. The victory vaults the Bullets' record to 12-6 overall and 8-3 in league play this winter, moving them into a tie for third place in the conference standings.
Gettysburg ended a 10-game skid to McDaniel (9-9, 8-4 CC) and won for the first time in Westminster since a 65-54 victory during the 1996-97 season. The Bullets shot 53.1 percent from the field in the game, including 9-of-14 from beyond the arc. Fields finished 9-of-16 from the field and 4-of-8 from distance to come up just two points shy of her career high. White, the team's top three-point threat, keyed in from distance early in the game en route to a season-high 16 points, finishing 6-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The Green Terror held sway in the opening minutes of the game, scoring seven of the first eight points and led 9-3 at 17:13. Back-to-back-to-back lay-ups by Fields,
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing), and
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) in just under one minute knotted the game at 9-9, and following an exchange of buckets, Gettysburg took its first lead of the game 14-13 on a three-pointer by Fields at 13:40.
The Bullets continued to build on the momentum, gaining a seven-point lead (22-15) on another three-pointer by Fields later in the half, but the hosts battled back with an 8-0 run to regain the advantage 25-24 on a jumper by Whitney Snoops with 8:01 to play. The Green Terror held the advantage for three minutes until a furious 13-2 run fueled by two three-pointers and a lay-up by White put the visitors up 40-32 with just under three minutes before the break. That's where the margin stayed as Gettysburg went into the locker room with a 45-37 lead.
In the final period, the Bullets held steady, even lengthening the lead to a game-high 13 points (61-48) at 13:45 on a three-pointer and jumper by White and Moser, respectively. McDaniel clawed its way back into the game by the midway point of the half, however, and trailed 66-61 with 8:27 remaining. That would be as close as the hosts would get the rest of the way as Hartman quelled the run with a free throw and Drechsler stomped the door shut with a three-pointer to put Gettysburg back up by nine (70-61) with under eight minutes to play. The Green Terror missed some key opportunities down the stretch, while the Bullets connected on 5-of-7 field goals in the final four minutes to seal the win.
Gettysburg posted its highest point total since 2004-05 when it blasted Haverford College 90-52. Oddly enough, the Bullets were out-rebounded for the first time in six games, but they made up for it by scoring 18 points on 17 Green Terror turnovers.
Moser and Drechsler each hit for double figures in the win, the former finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds and the latter tallying 11 points in front of her hometown crowd. Senior
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) finished a productive night with seven points, six rebounds, and five assists, while freshman
Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) posted seven points, including going 4-of-4 at the free throw line during a key stretch in the second half. Sophomore forward
Nicole Dobranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) posted nine points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots for the victors.
Ashley Lyles led McDaniel with a double-double, netting 15 points and 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Robbin Gregg accumulated 14 points and four assists, while Ali Moreland posted 12 points and five rebounds.
Next up for Gettysburg is a road trip to Washington (Md.) College (7-11, 4-7 CC) for a conference contest on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m.
