GETTYSBURG, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Gettysburg College women's soccer team gave a top-10 team all it could handle, but the Bullets came up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision to ninth-ranked and undefeated Johns Hopkins University in Centennial Conference action Saturday evening at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (3-4-4, 2-3 CC) continued its stellar defensive play and has now limited its opponent to less than two goals in all but one of its 11 matches.
The Bullets tied third-ranked Messiah College 0-0 back on Sept. 24.
Erica Suter gave the Blue Jays (9-0-3, 5-0 CC) all the scoring they would need with her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 21st minute. Following a Hopkins corner, Caitlin Moore headed a loose ball in front of the goal, where Suter kicked it out of mid air and into the lower right corner of the net on the team's sixth shot of the game.
Hopkins took seven more shots over the final 24 minutes. But senior goalie
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) came up with four saves to keep the Bullets within a goal at the break.
The Blue Jays continued to pressure the goal in the second half, when it out-shot the Bullets 12-3. On the other end of the field, junior
Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) put a potential game-tying shot on goal in the 52nd minute; however, the straightaway attempt was saved by Hopkins goalie Karen Guszkowski.
St. Pierre stopped five more shots in the second stanza to finish the night with nine saves. Guszkowski was credited with one save and recorded her seventh shutout of the season.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts York (Pa.) College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.
