GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jill Stanley scored the golden goal game-winner in the 95th minute and York (Pa.) College dealt Gettysburg a 1-0 setback in non-conference women's soccer action at Clark Field Wednesday evening.
The Bullets (3-5-4) have now held 11 of their 12 opponents to zero or one goal this season.
Stanley's goal was set up by a cross from the right by Ali Jones, whose pass was deflected by a Gettysburg defender. But Stanley gathered the ball in the middle of the box and punched in a shot into the lower left of the net, giving the Spartans (9-4-1) their fifth win in a row.
Gettysburg, which was playing its sixth overtime game of the year, dropped its fourth 1-0 match this season.
The Spartans threatened early, gaining three straight corner kicks over a one-minute span in the 15th and 16th minutes. However, the team failed to attempt a shot during the span.
York proceeded to take the first five shots of the game, and Allie Jensen had the team's best look of the first half in the 28th minute. Lining up from the left wing, Jensen drilled a low liner that senior keeper
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonberry, N.H./Trinity) tipped to her left.
The Bullets took their lone shot of the opening period in the 42nd minute, when sophomore
Jordann Smak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) had a low chip saved by Desiree Halaka.
Gettysburg out-shot the Spartans 7-4 in the second half, with four coming over the final 3:12 of regulation. Sophomore
Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) had a header that was saved in the 89th minute before York mounted one last rally, gaining a corner in the 90th minute. Stanley was able to get off a shot with around a half minute to play, but it deflected off a Gettysburg defender.
In overtime, Montague had an excellent look at the goal in the 94th minute, but her fifth shot of the night was stopped by York defender Caitlin Allen on the doorstep at the right post. The Spartans then regained possession before scoring the game-winner just over a minute later.
York finished with a slight 11-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners.
St. Pierre finished the night with three saves while Halaka stopped four shots for the Spartans.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it visits Washington (Md.) College in a Centennial Conference match at 4 p.m.
