Led by senior
Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School [N.J.]) and junior
Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), the Bullets started the game with a furious offensive onslaught, taking seven shots over the first eight minutes. Menge attempted four shots while Bayon had three looks over the stretch, but Gettysburg hit the post twice while Bedrock had three saves to keep the Bullets at bay.
Gettysburg finally broke through on its ninth shot, when DeBlois took a feed from Hynes in front of the net and delivered his second goal of the season in the 14th minute. It held up as the first collegiate game-winning goal for DeBlois.
The Shoremen nearly answered within the next five minutes, as Tony Armiger had his header bounce off the crossbar. It was the second of three consecutive shots for Washington, the last of which was saved by Greenlaw in the 19th minute.
The Bullets reeled off four more shots over the remainder of the half after DeBlois' tally but were unable to dent Bedrock, who made seven saves over the opening 45 minutes. Gettysburg out-shot the Shoremen 14-4 in the opening half.
Washington turned up the heat offensively in the second stanza, and four of the Shoremen's first five shots – taken over the first 25:11 of the half – were on goal. But that's when Greenlaw made four of his seven saves. He also stopped a header in the 81st minute, and turned aside his final shot of the night in the 89th minute to preserve his clean sheet.
After being held in check offensively for most of the second period, the Bullets took four of their eight second-half shots in the final 7:40 of the stanza but were unable to put any of those attempts on goal.
The Shoremen held a 10-8 shot advantage in the second half but Gettysburg out-shot Washington 22-14 for the night. It was the fourth time this season and the second match in a row that the Bullets exceeded 20 shots. Menge finished with nine shots for the Bullets while Hynes took six.
Gettysburg takes a break from its Centennial Conference schedule on Tuesday, when it hosts Shenandoah University at 7 p.m.
