CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior
Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) scored a pair of second-half goals to lift 15th-ranked Gettysburg College past host Washington (Md.) College 2-0 in Centennial Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Bullets improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference, while the Shorewomen dropped to 9-4, 4-3 CC.
Gettysburg has lost just once in the regular season to an unranked foe over the last two years and Ruth ensured that fact would stay the same with her ninth and 10th goals of the fall. Following a scoreless first half, the Bullet senior put her team on the board at 47:08, converting a pass into the middle by junior
Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson). Ruth followed with an insurance goal just over nine minutes later, slapping home a loose ball behind the keeper.
Both goalies were tested early in the match with Washington's Elena Nicholoff stopping Gettysburg junior
Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) just 39 seconds in and the Bullets'
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) stonewalling Amy Spadanuta at 3:21. That would be Anderson's only save of the first half, while Nicholoff posted eight first-period stops.
After out-shooting the hosts 13-3 in the opening stanza, Gettysburg maintained the offensive with 10 more second-half attempts to Washington's five shot attempts. The Shorewomen took three straight shots at the goal just over the 63-minute mark, but Anderson was up the task with three saves in a span of four seconds.
In addition to leading shots 23-8, the Bullets also owned a significant edge in penalty corners 15-8. Harwood led the attack with six shots and junior
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) posted five attempts. Ruth connected on half of her shot attempts and with her goals, moved into sixth on Gettysburg's all-time scoring list with 73 points, passing 2000 graduate Jenni White. She also moved into a tie for seventh with Pam Williams '88 with 28 career goals.
Anderson posted five saves en route to her fourth shutout of the 2008 season. Nicholoff stopped 16 shots for Washington.
Gettysburg returns to action against McDaniel College on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
