Box Score
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Winless and scoreless in its last five matches, the Gettysburg College women's soccer team got back on the winning side in a big way Saturday afternoon at Washington (Md.) College, posting a season-high four goals en route to a Centennial Conference shutout victory. The win lifts the Bullets to 4-5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Against some of its best competition of the season, Gettysburg had posted four one-goal losses and a scoreless tie over the last five matches with a scoreless streak reaching almost 480 minutes heading into Saturday's match at Washington (1-12, 0-6 CC). Both skids came to a crashing halt against the Shorewomen as freshman
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) put the Bullets on the board in the seventh minute with her first collegiate goal via a pass from senior
Erin Miller (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Just 51 seconds later, Hellerman contributed to Gettysburg's second goal with a pass to sophomore
Jordann Smak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg).
Washington managed a pair of shots on goal in the first period, but both were turned away by senior goalkeeper
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity).
With Hellerman and Smak each recording their first goals of 2008, another pair of Bullets accomplished the same feat in the final period. Just over seven minutes into the last stanza, sophomore
Bethany Taylor (Derwood, Md./Magruder) crossed a ball into the box and junior defender
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was right there for the conversion, marking her first goal since her freshman season.
Gettysburg tacked on its fourth score in the 76th minute courtesy of a corner kick. Freshman
Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) provided the pass from the corner and fellow first-year
Liz Curtin (Summit, N.J./Summit) provided the finish, stopping the ball with her body and kicking it home for her first career score.
Freshman
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) stopped both of the Shorewomen's stabs at the goal following Gettysburg's last score to preserve the shutout.
The Bullets won the battle on shots 20-7 and corner kicks 6-2. Sophomore
Lauren Walsh (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) accounted for five shots, while freshman
Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) tallied four shots.
Stephanie Willingham led Washington with two shots, while goalie Tori Ripple made eight saves.
Gettysburg returns home for its next contest against McDaniel College on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
