GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) posted her first collegiate hat trick, scoring three goals and assisting on another to lead the 16th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team to a key 5-1 Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel College Wednesday afternoon at a sunny, blustery Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
With the win, Gettysburg (10-5, 5-2 CC), which erupted with four goals in the second half, took over sole possession of third place in the conference standings. The Bullets and Green Terror (7-8, 4-3 CC) entered the game tied for third.
Harwood, whose seven points were a career-high, supplied the only offense of the opening period when sent home a shot from top of the circle with 27:16 left in the half. Her goal came after a shot by senior
Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) was kicked out by McDaniel goalie Erika Wawzyanick.
The Bullets out-shot the Green Terror 6-2 for the period, but Wawzyanick made three saves to keep McDaniel within a goal.
Gettysburg wasted little time padding their lead in the second half, scoring twice over the opening four minutes of the period. Ruth made it a 2-0 game just 1:37 into the half when she took a feed from junior
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) in front of the cage and knocked in her 11th goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, Harwood lined up from the left side and lifted a nifty shot off the stick of a defender, over Wawzyanick's head, and into the top of the cage for her second goal.
The Green Terror got on the scoreboard with 26:56 left, when, from the left post, Jessica Largent redirected a right cross from Michelle Fluty to make it 3-1. But the Bullets restored their three-goal advantage when Harwood made a perfect pass from the top of the circle to the right post, where Hearn slapped in her 11th goal of the season to spot the Bullets a 4-1 lead with 18:08 remaining.
Harwood capped off her big day when she scored with 8:56 left, smoking a shot from 10 yards out off a scramble. It was her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Bullets out-shot the Terror 20-4 and held a 15-7 advantage in corners.
Wawzyanick finished with nine saves for McDaniel while junior
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) did not need to make a save in earning the win for Gettysburg.
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Swarthmore College at noon.
