GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Lauren Walsh (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) posted one goal and one assist and the Gettysburg College women's soccer team earned a 3-0 Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel College Wednesday evening at Clark Field.
The Bullets, who scored their first two goals over a 48-second stretch midway through the first half, recorded their second straight Centennial Conference shutout and improved to 5-5-4 and 4-3 in conference play with the victory. The Green Terror were shut out for the fifth straight match and saw their record dip to 4-10 and 1-6 in the Centennial.
Gettysburg, which out-shot McDaniel 20-10, saw its first good look in the ninth minute, when McDaniel goalie Leanne Holinger made a leaping save on a sharply-struck ball by freshman
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West). Sophomore
Jordann Smak (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) then broke through in the 26th minute on the team's sixth shot of the night. Dribbling in alone from 40 yards out, Smak stopped at the top of the box and deposited the ball into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season.
Less than a minute later, junior
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) took a pass from Walsh and slotted a shot from the right with the goalie out for her second tally of the year.
Gettysburg out-shot McDaniel 10-6 in the opening half, when Holinger made four of her saves.
The Bullets came out firing at the start of the second period, peppering Holinger with five shots – including four by Hellerman – over the first nine minutes. Gettysburg had its best look at the goal of the second half in the 69th minute, when junior
Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) rushed in on a short breakaway and had her point-blank shot snuffed out by Holinger.
Walsh completed the scoring in the 77th minute, belting a shot from the right side of the box and off the goalie's hands for her first goal of the season.
The Bullets held McDaniel to four shots in the second half and came away with their fifth shutout of the season. Senior
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonberry, N.H./Trinity) made two saves while playing the opening 84:43 before freshman
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) stopped one shot over the final 5:17.
Holinger finished with five saves for McDaniel while Kristin Cochran had one save in the final 5:17.
Gettysburg continues its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Swarthmore College at 3 p.m.
