GETTYSBURG, Pa. –Gettysburg College and McDaniel College did battle on two fronts on Wednesday night in their Centennial Conference volleyball match at Bream Gym. Not only did the Bullets and Green Terror face off in their annual regular season contest, but the two squads also participated in “Digging for a Cure” as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Gettysburg (14-10, 6-1 CC) won the match in four sets, downing McDaniel (10-15, 3-4 CC) 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, and 25-20. Against breast cancer, both teams came out victors, totaling a whopping 174 digs in the contest. Pledges were taken for each dig recorded prior to the contest and flat donations were also accepted throughout the night. The proceeds from Wednesday night's affair in addition to the contests played by all the Centennial Conference institutions will be donated directly to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, an organization based in Haverford, Pa. The grand total from all participating schools will be announced at the conference tournament championships on Nov. 8-9.
The Bullets came out on top thanks to a pair of monster attacking nights from sophomore
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and junior
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy). Yoder tied a personal best with 16 kills adding seven digs and two blocks, while Mercier notched a dozen kills with six digs and two blocks. Senior
Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) totaled seven kills and eight digs.
Gettysburg managed 95 digs in the contest, markings its third-highest production of the season. Junior libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) paced the effort with a season-high 27 digs. Junior setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) put in an all-around performance with six kills, 32 assists, and 16 digs. Junior
Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) also reached double-figures in the dig department with 11.
The Bullets service game wreaked havoc with McDaniel's back row as freshman
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) posted a trio of aces, while freshman
Jamie Huffman (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and Yoder each notched two.
Taylor Herrgott led McDaniel with a match-high 18 kills, while Sara Hanlon posted a dozen successful attacks. Kristie Fourcade led the Green Terror defense with 19 digs and dished out 18 assists.
Gettysburg returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 25, with a road trip to Swarthmore College for a conference affair. Opening serve is slated for 1 p.m.
