Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. – For the third consecutive season, a victor could not be decided in a men's soccer match between Gettysburg College and Dickinson College as the Bullets and Red Devils played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa. With the outcome, both teams maintain top-five positions in the Centennial Conference standings with Gettysburg (7-4-4, 3-2-2 CC) jumping ahead of idle Muhlenberg College into fourth.
Gettysburg and Dickinson (10-4-1, 4-2-1 CC), which came into Saturday's contest ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region and third overall in the CC, had played scoreless overtime ties during the regular season in 2006 and in the first round of the conference playoffs last fall. Saturday's match up was not headed down the shutout road as Bullets first-year
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) picked up the contest's first tally in the 31st minute. It marked the fourth consecutive match DeBlois has reached the scoreboard.
After out-shooting Gettysburg 9-5 in the opening period, Dickinson finally cracked the scoring column early in the second half as Dale Rodman converted a pass from Mike Montross at 47:04. It only took 16 seconds for the Bullets to answer as freshman
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) notched his fifth goal of the fall via a pass from senior
Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)).
Gettysburg appeared to have the makings of a victory heading into the final 10 minutes, but a costly foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Red Devils. Thomas Parkinson took the free shot and delivered for the hosts, tying the game at two goals apiece and bringing overtime.
Dickinson doubled Gettysburg's shot total with a 14-7 advantage, but the Bullets managed 10 corner kicks to the host's seven. Hynes and DeBlois led the visitors with three and two shots, respectively, while Mike Montross led the Devils with four shots.
Senior goalie
Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) stopped three shots for Gettysburg, while Rodrigo Barbosa managed a pair of saves for Dickinson.
Dickinson retained its hold on third place in the Centennial standings with 13 points. Gettysburg is in fourth with 11 points, but Muhlenberg is right behind at 10 points and has a make-up match with Haverford College slated for Sunday (Oct. 26).
The Bullets host a pair of evening conference contests next week beginning with ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University (11-2-3, 5-0-2 CC) on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. Gettysburg closes the regular season against McDaniel College (4-8-1, 1-4-0 CC) next Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.
