Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg scored on three of its eight shots and the Bullets upset 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins 3-1 in a game loaded with playoff implications for both teams at a frigid Clark Field Wednesday evening.
The Bullets (8-4-4, 4-2-2 CC) entered the game in fifth place in the conference standings but leaped over Muhlenberg, who lost 1-0 to Swarthmore on Wednesday, to move into fourth with 14 points. Heading into its final game of the season, Gettysburg trails Dickinson (16 points, 5-2-1 CC in conference play), Johns Hopkins (17 points, 5-1-2 CC), and Swarthmore (21 points, 7-1 CC).
The win was Gettysburg's first over a ranked opponent since knocking off No. 11 Franklin & Marshall in last year's Centennial Conference semifinals. The Bullets have now won four of their last five games and are on a five-match unbeaten streak. It was also the team's first win over the Blue Jays (11-3-3) since the 2001 Centennial Conference Tournament.
Freshman
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) celebrated his Centennial Conference Player of the Week award by scoring a goal for the fifth game in a row to put the Bullets on the scoreboard. Classmate
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) initiated the opening strike when, in the 13th minute, he rolled a nice outlet pass down the right side of the field ahead of DeBlois, who tracked it down at the top of the box. After dribbling past the oncoming goalie, he sent slotted the ball across the goal mouth and just beyond the reach of several scrambling defenders for his fifth goal of the year.
The Bullets nearly doubled their lead in the 30th minute, when junior
Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) rocketed a straightaway shot off the crossbar from 30 yards out. But senior
Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School [N.J.]) did the trick in the 38th minute, taking a centering pass from classmate
Kieran Lade (Convent Station, N.J./Morristown) and one-timing a shot into the right side of the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Blue Jays held a slim 8-6 shot advantage in the opening half, but only one of their shots was on goal.
Hopkins turned up the heat in the second half, when it out-shot the Bullets 9-2. Gettysburg goalie
Adam Finkel (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) saved three of the Blue Jays first five shots before defender Corey Adams made it a one-goal game in the 71st minute. After a corner kick ricocheted off a Bullet defender, Adams picked up the loose ball on the right side of the box and sent it high into the net for his first goal of the season.
The Blue Jays attempted two more shots before the Bullets put the game on ice with a terrific goal in the 87th minute. Senior
Ross Witte (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) drilled an indirect kick from around 40 yards out on the right sideline and found Hynes alone cutting in front of the net with a perfect pass. Without breaking his stride, Hynes headed the ball over the keeper for his sixth goal of the season.
Hopkins out-shot the Bullets 17-8 for the night but Finkel came up with four saves. The Blue Jays also took the only five corner kicks of the evening.
Matt Mierley made one save for Hopkins.
Gettysburg will look to clinch a berth in the Centennial Conference playoffs when it hosts McDaniel College in its regular season finale on Saturday at 7 p.m.
