Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A deflected shot off a defender in the eighth minute resulted in the only score of the day between Gettysburg College and Ursinus College and unfortunately for the hosts the unlucky bounce was not in their favor as the visiting Bears held on for a 1-0 victory in a Centennial Conference women's soccer match at Clark Field on Saturday.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Franklin & Marshall College on controversial hand-ball call late in the match, Gettysburg (3-3-3, 2-2-0 CC) once again found itself out of favor with Lady Luck. Ursinus' (4-6-1, 3-1-0 CC) first offensive attempt of the contest came off the foot of Jess Porcelan and appeared to be going wide. However, the shot deflected off a defender and caromed into the right corner of the goal, just out of reach of Bullet goalie Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) at 7:37.

The Bullets had three scoring opportunities in the next eight minutes, but a header by junior Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) hit the post, junior Kerry McKenna's (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) shot sailed wide, and freshman Sam Hellerman's Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) attempt was stopped by Ursinus goalie Lisa Clark. Another opportunity by McKenna in the 20th minute was stopped as Clark came sliding out to smother the kick right off the attacker's foot.

Gettysburg's best chance at tying the contest came in the 25th minute when a header by sophomore Lauren Walsh (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) clanged off the crossbar and sat in front of the goal. Gaston was right there to attempt the put-back, but her shot had too much lift and sailed over the goal.

Ursinus pressed the offensive in the second half and out-shot the hosts 8-3. St. Pierre stopped all three shots she saw on goal and Clark made one save for Ursinus, preserving the score.

McKenna and Hellerman each fired three shots for Gettysburg, while Gaston and Walsh each took two. St. Pierre made four saves for the Bullets.

Clark made three saves for the Bears and Porcelan was the only player with more than one shot, firing four.

Gettysburg takes a break from conference play with a road trip to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m.
