GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School [N.J.]) scored one goal and handed out two assists, leading Gettysburg to a 4-1 win over Haverford College in Centennial Conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Clark Field.
Gettysburg (5-4-3, 2-2-1 CC), which snapped a three-match winless streak, received balanced scoring, getting four goals from four different players while six different Bullets figured into the scoring column.
The Bullets four goals marked the team's second-best scoring output of the year, ranking only behind the team's 5-1 win over Marymount in their season opener.
Steven Griffith gave the Fords (2-6-2, 0-3-2 CC) the early lead in the ninth minute, lining up for a shot from just inside the 18 and drilling it into the lower right. But the Fords would only manage one more shot on goal the rest of the way, which senior goalie
Jeff Greenlaw (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) saved in the 59th minute.
The Bullets tied it up in the 15th minute when freshman
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) struck for his first collegiate goal, taking a push pass from Bayon and booming home a straightaway shot into the upper right. Senior
Ian Forster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) then gave Gettysburg the lead for good when, in the 36th minute, he rolled in a shot past a fallen Haverford goalie and into the lower left corner of the net.
Forster's goal was set up by a short pass from freshman
Doug Ammon (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Episcopal Academy), who recorded the assist just 20 seconds after entering his first collegiate game.
Gettysburg out-shot the Fords 11-4 in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead into halftime intermission.
Although the Bullets continued to control the match in the second half, when it out-shot Haverford 10-3, the Fords managed to keep it a one-goal game until the 80th minute. That's when Bayon took a left cross from sophomore
Teddy Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and booted in a flying volley for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) put the nail in the coffin in the 84th minute, taking a cross from the same spot – this one from Bayon – and beating the goalie into the lower right for his fourth tally of the year.
Greenlaw earned the win in goal to improve to 3-2 on the season while Adam Care stopped six shots and was charged with the loss for Haverford.
The Bullets finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots.
Gettysburg takes eight days off before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when it visits Washington (Md.) College at 7:30 p.m. in another Centennial Conference tilt
