GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team suffered its first Centennial Conference loss of the season on Wednesday night in Bream Gym, falling to visiting Johns Hopkins University 3-1. The Bullets dropped to 11-10 and 4-1 in the conference, while the Blue Jays improved to 15-5, 3-1 CC.
Gettysburg held a lead late in the first set before a series of errors led to its demise. Six of Johns Hopkins' final nine points came as the result of errors by the hosts, leading to a 26-24 victory. The Bullets rebounded with a two-point victory of their own as the Blue Jays committed a series of costly errors resulting in seven of Gettysburg's final eight points in a 25-23 decision. Johns Hopkins took control early in each of the final two sets to emerge with decisive wins 25-16 and 25-14.
Most of Gettysburg's offense came from junior
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and sophomore
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus). Mercier posted a match-high and season-high 14 kills, while Yoder recorded 13. Sophomore setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) provided the setup for the hitters with 33 assists and did some attacking of her own with a total of five kills.
With Johns Hopkins attacking the net repeatedly, the defense was busy as junior libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) and Krampf posted 25 and 21 digs, respectively. Junior
Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) also reached double-figures with 19 digs and added four total blocks.
Sarah Feicht, Amanda Lewis, and Allison Cappelaere each posted double-digit kill efforts for Hopkins with 12, 11, and 10, respectively. Lewis notched a triple-double as well, adding 37 assist and 14 digs. Cappelaere led the Blue Jay defense with 25 digs.
Gettysburg has a week off from competition before playing its final non-conference match of the season against Mt. Aloysius College on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Bream Gym.
