ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team played its fifth overtime match of the 2008 season on Wednesday night at Lebanon Valley College, and for the fourth time the result came out to a draw as the Bullets and Dutchmen played to a 0-0 tie. With the tie, Gettysburg's record moved to 3-3-4 overall, while Lebanon Valley moved to 7-3-2.
The zeroes on the scoreboard were not because of a lack of effort as the two squads combined for 26 shots in the contest, including 16 on goal. The hosts posted six shots in the opening half with three turned away by Bullets goalie
Danielle St. Pierre (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity). Gettysburg fired three attempts at the Lebanon Valley goal, but each was stopped from going in, two saved by keeper Alyson Reitmeyer and the third, a header by freshman
Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's), kicked away by a defender in the 26th minute.
In the final period, the Bullets pressed the offensive with 11 shots, including seven directly on goal. In the 63rd minute, Gettysburg attempted three consecutive shots, but Reitmeyer stopped the first and the third and the second, a shot by freshman
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), clanged off the crossbar.
Sophomore
Lauren Walsh (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) appeared to have the makings of the potential game-winning goal in the 79th minute only to have another defender head the ball away from the net. Reitmeyer made four saves over the final 10 minutes of regulation, while St. Pierre stopped one shot.
Gettysburg managed three of four shots in the two overtime periods. Montague accounted for two attempts in the second overtime – the first stopped by Reitmeyer in the 102nd minute and the second shot sailing high over the goal in the 109th minute. St. Pierre made the final save of the night on a Dutchmen shot at 109:10 to preserve the draw.
Montague and Hellerman each recorded four shots for Gettysburg, while Walsh attempted three. St. Pierre made five saves.
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action this weekend by hosting nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
