GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) scored a game-high 28 points, leading No. 11 Gettysburg to a 71-56 victory over Elizabethtown College in the first round of the 18th annual Gettysburg Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament in the Bullets season opener.
With the win, Gettysburg advances to the tournament championship game, where it will meet SUNY Geneseo at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Geneseo topped Rowan University 62-55 in the other first-round game. Rowan and Elizabethtown will play in the consolation game at 2 p.m.
The Bullets, who shot 60.0% from the field, led from start to finish after outscoring the Blue Jays (2-1) 12-4 to start the game. The Blue Jays answered with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to one (14-13) but could not take the lead.
The victory extended Gettysburg's home winning streak to 11, dating back to last season. The Bullets have now won their home opener in nine of the last 10 seasons.
Capkin shot 10-for-17 and was 4-of-9 from three-point range. Senior guard Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and pulled down six rebounds while sophomore forward Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) tied a career-high with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Sophomore center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) also hit double figures in scoring, notching 11 points to go with six rebounds and five assists.
Junior center Mike Church paced Elizabethtown, which shot just 31.7% for the game, with 17 points.
After E-town's early run, the Bullets gradually pulled away over the remainder of the half. Their lead reached double digits after a pair of Capkin free throws gave the hosts a 27-16 lead with 6:17 remaining in the period. Capkin knocked down a jumper with 31 seconds left to make it a 35-22 game at the half.
Gettysburg outscored the Jays 11-4 to start the second half as its lead swelled to 20 (46-26) with 16:25 on the clock after two Kennedy foul shots. The Bullets pushed the gap to 21 (50-29) on a Kennedy jumper minutes later before E-town whittled the deficit to 13 with 12:02 left but that's as close as it would get. Gettysburg led by as much as 24 late in the game.
Phil Schaffer added 11 points for the Blue Jays.
