Gettysburg-Geneseo Box Score Elizabethtown-Rowan Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore forward
Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) nailed an 18-foot jumper with 12 seconds left, and it held up as the game-winning bucket as No. 11 Gettysburg held off SUNY Geneseo 58-56 to win the 18th annual Gettysburg Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bream Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) finished with 12 points and five assists and was named the tournament MVP following his 28-point performance against Elizabethtown College in the first round.
With the shot clock winding down, Kennedy dribbled inside the three-point line on the left elbow and let fly a contested shot that rattled in. Geneseo then took two timeouts before junior forward Kyle Stevens missed the rim on a potential game-winning three-pointer from the top of the arc.
Kennedy, who was making his first collegiate start, also chased down an offensive rebound on his own missed three-pointer prior to hitting his big shot.
Sophomore center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) led the Bullets (2-0) with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with a career-high four steals while Kennedy and senior guard
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) added 10 points apiece.
Senior guard Scott Morton, Geneseo's selection to the all-tournament team, scored a game-high 20 points to go with six assists and five rebounds. Senior forward Jeff Howe added 13 points and seven rebounds while junior forward Brandon Simpson contributed 12 points.
Powers, Dorsey, Elizabethtown's Joe Flanagan, and Rowan's Billy Care joined Morton on the all-tournament team. Rowan defeated E-town 63-56 in the consolation game.
The Blue Knights (2-1) led for nearly the entire first half before Gettysburg closed the period on a 12-0 run. A Howe lay-in made it 23-16 with 4:49 on the clock before senior guard
Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) dropped in a lay-up to start the rally. Kennedy then knocked down a jumper before Capkin scored five straight points on a pair of free throws and a three-pointer, and the Bullets would not trail the rest of the way. Kennedy capped the run with a trey of his own as the Orange & Blue went into the locker room leading 28-23.
After Geneseo crept to within two, Gettysburg pushed its advantage to as much as nine after Dorsey connected on a pair of free throws with 5:41 left. However, the Bullets allowed the Knights to climb back into it after making four straight turnovers that led to a 9-0 Geneseo run. Stevens scored the final five points of the spurt, drilling a three with 2:53 showing before tying the game at 53-all following a lay-up with 2:32 left.
Senior forward
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) gave the Bullets some breathing room when he completed a conventional three-point play, driving hard down the lane and hitting the free throw to make it a 56-53 game. But the Knights pulled even (56-56) once again after a Howe foul shot followed by two Mike Hoy charity chucks with 1:11 on the clock, setting up Kennedy's heroics.
Gettysburg shot 52.6% for the game and 91.7% (11-of-12) at the foul line but was guilty of 20 turnovers. Genseo, which turned it over 15 times, shot 46.8% from the floor but was only 2-of-14 from beyond the arc.
The Bullets return home on Tuesday, when they take on York (Pa.) College at 8 p.m. in a non-conference outing.
