Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior guard
Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John's at Prospect Hall) scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, including four straight free throws in the final 26 seconds, as No. 11 Gettysburg defeated York (Pa.) College 60-51 in a non-conference men's basketball defensive battle Tuesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets (3-0) led by only four with 2:11 left but salted the game away at the free-throw line, making seven of their last eight foul shots.
Senior guard
Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) added 16 points for Gettysburg while sophomore center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) contributed with seven points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Senior forward
Joe Spierenburg (Chambersburg, Pa./St. Maria Goretti [Md.]) blocked five shots and hit three crucial foul shots down the stretch.
Freshman guard Julian Watson led York (1-4) with 13 points while junior guard Nick Brady posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Jeremy Keefer also hit double-digits with 10 points.
Gettysburg increased its home winning streak to 13, the longest since a 16-gamer over parts of the 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons. The Bullets also captured their 13th straight regular season game, the longest since their school-record 15-game winning streak that overlapped the 1938-39 and 1939-40 campaigns.
With the win, the Bullets also improved to 15-1 since last season in games decided by less than 10 points.
The Spartans trailed just 53-49 after a pair of Keefer free throws with 2:11 remaining before putting Spierenburg on the foul line. Shooting a 1-and-1, Spierenburg knocked down 1-of-2 shots before Brady hit a pair of foul shots with 55 seconds remaining to make it 54-51. The Spartans then intentionally fouled Spierenburg again, putting him on the line for another 1-and-1, and this time he sunk both attempts to push his team's lead to 55-51 with 46 ticks showing.
Dorsey iced the game the rest of the way, knocking down his four foul shots while York committed a turnover and missed a pair of three-pointers on its final three touches.
After Gettysburg opened the game on a 6-0 run, York ran off an 8-2 spurt to pull even with 15:10 on the clock following a jumper from freshman forward Paul Kouvaris. Just over a minute later, Watson completed a conventional three-point play, kicking off a 9-0 Spartan surge. A Keefer jumper with 12:07 left in the opening half made it 19-11, the visitors largest lead of the night, before the Bullets climbed back into it.
A lay-up from Dorsey with 11:08 on the clock broke a 3:04 Bullet scoring drought, and Gettysburg drew to within one (21-20) after a lay-up from sophomore center
Chip Naddaff (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) with 7:14 remaining. Later in the half, Gettysburg used an 8-0 run to assume a 28-25 lead with 2:20 left. Powers got it started with a pair of free throws before sophomore guard
Paul Crone (Braddock Heights, Md./Middletown) and Dorsey nailed back-to-back three-pointers.
York scored the final four points of the half, however, and took a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Spartans led by five (33-28) in the early going before the Bullets scored six unanswered points to retake the lead. Gettysburg went ahead to stay on a Dorsey lay-up with 10:24 left that gave the hosts a 40-39 advantage with 10:24 on the clock. Dorsey put a stir into the crowd less than a minute later, when he threw down a fastbreak dunk after the Spartans turned the ball over near midcourt on the ensuing possession. York kept it close, however, and had a chance to tie it when Spierenburg came up with a big block in the paint with 4:03 remaining to preserve a two-point lead.
A pair of late Dorsey buckets kept the Bullets in front down the stretch. His driving bank shot from the right wing made it 51-47 with 2:57 remaining, and his lay-up off a beautiful backdoor pass from Spierenburg gave the Bullets a 53-47 advantage with 2:25 to go.
Gettysburg shot 41.7% for the game while holding the Spartans to a 40.0% mark. Neither team shot well from three-point range, with York going 0-for-8 and the Bullets connecting on just 6 of 18 trifectas. York managed just 10 trips to the line, where it scored seven points, while Gettysburg was 14-for-22 at the charity stripe.
The Bullets take a week off for Thanksgiving break before playing its Centennial Conference opener on Wednesday, Dec. 3, hosting Dickinson College at 8 p.m.
