Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Allie Drechsler (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) poured in a career-high tying 21 points and added eight rebounds to lift Gettysburg College to an 84-72 victory over Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference women's basketball action at Bream Gym. The Bullets maintain their fourth-place standing in the conference with the win, improving to 15-8 overall and 11-5 in league play, while Swarthmore dropped to 6-16, 3-13 CC.
Both teams were participating in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) “Think Pink” initiative in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness. Donations were being collected each time a three-pointer was made and both teams obliged the audience with a combined 17 made shots from distance in the game. The Bullets had the edge with nine, including five by Drechsler, a new career high. Senior
Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) tied a career high with 18 points, while sophomore
Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and freshman
Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) each tallied double-figures with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Trailing 12-9 in the opening half, Gettysburg received a three-pointer and a jumper from Hartman to retake the lead for good at 12:31. Swarthmore continued to hang around, pulling to one point (18-17) at 8:50, but an 8-1 run by the hosts pushed the margin back to eight. Drechsler canned a pair of three-pointers in the final three minutes to push the Bullet lead to double figures twice, including 40-30 with 31 seconds remaining, but a half-court heave by Melissa Grigsby swished through the hoop to cut the margin to seven (40-33) at the break.
With the deficit teetering on double-digits for most of the start of the second half, Swarthmore managed to trim it back down to seven (50-43) just under the 10-minute mark and once again at 7:22 (68-61). That would be the closest the Garnet would get, however, as Gettysburg went on a 12-2 run to open up an insurmountable 17-point lead (80-63) with less than three minutes to play.
The Bullets canned 9-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc and out-rebounded the visitors 50-42. Drechsler finished 8-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-8 from distance, in addition to passing out four assists. Hartman shot 50 percent from the floor (5-of-10) and an impressive 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She picked up five rebounds, dished out three assists, and tallied three steals.
After being held to one bucket in the opening stanza, Moser posted a dozen points in the second half alone for the hosts. She tied Drechsler and sophomore
Nicole Dobranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) for team rebounding honors with eight boards. Fields chipped in with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while junior
Margaret White (Burke, Va./James W. Robinson) jumped off the Bullet bench for a pair of three-pointers as part of her eight-point night.
Swarthmore out-shot than the Bullets from the field (41.3-39.2), but the Garnet connected on only 12-of-20 free throw attempts (41.4 percent). Kathryn Stockbower notched a double-double with 19 points and a dozen rebounds, while Karen Berk picked up 14 points and eight rebounds. Melissa Grigsby led Swarthmore's bench with 14 points.
Gettysburg visits Franklin & Marshall College on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. inside the Mayser Center. The Bullets handed the Diplomats a 70-47 loss back on Jan. 24.
