FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore second baseman Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) went 3-for-4, but the Gettysburg College baseball team dropped an 11-3 decision at the University of Mary Washington in a non-conference outing Sunday afternoon.
Gettysburg (6-8), which closed out its four-game Virginia series at 1-3, was unable to overcome a six-run Mary Washington fourth, which put the Eagles (12-4) on top 9-1. Mary Washington out-hit the Bullets 16-11.
Senior first baseman Matt Stillitano (Ewing, N.J./The Hun School of Princeton) and senior catcher Mike Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) each went 2-for-3 for Gettysburg while Stillitano drove in three runs, including a two-run double. Senior centerfielder Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was 2-for-5 at the dish.
Senior Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark) started on the mound for Gettysburg and suffered the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits over three innings.
Eric Rehbein went 4-for-4 for the Eagles while Dan Murdoch earned the victory, allowing only one run on eight hits while striking out seven over 6 1/3.
Mary Washington jumped on top with a three-run, four-hit first. The Bullets made it 3-1 on a Stillitano sacrifice fly in the fourth before the Eagles broke through in the bottom of the frame with six runs on five hits and two errors.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs before Stillitano set the final score with his two-run double in the ninth.
Sophomore Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's Abbey School) threw 1 2/3 innings in relief, yielding three runs (one earned) on five hits. Freshman Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) was touched for one run over 1 1/3 while sophomores John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) and Packer Larson (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) tossed one inning apiece, with Antrim-Cashin blanking the Eagles and Larson giving up one run. Sweeney, Antrim-Cashin, and Larson each struck out two.
Gettysburg kicks off a five-game homestand on Tuesday, when it hosts York (Pa.) College at 3:30 p.m. in a single nine-inning, non-conference game.
