ANNVILLE, Pa. – Pitching ruled the day in a non-conference doubleheader between Gettysburg College and Lebanon Valley College as the two schools combined for just 14 total hits and four runs. The Bullets picked up the win in the opener 1-0 behind a solid pitching performance by junior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and a seventh-inning single by
Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg), while the Dutchmen took the nightcap 2-1 thanks to 14 strikeouts by their freshman hurler.
Gettysburg (8-4) put runners on the base paths in each of the first four frames of game one, but the visitors could not find the means to crack the scoreboard, including stranding senior
Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) on third following a lead-off double in the fourth inning. Lebanon Valley (7-6) didn't fair much better against Rubino, managing just five total base runners in the entire game.
The visitors finally struck pay dirt in the final inning. Following a groundout to start the inning, freshman
Megan MacNabb (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) drew a walk and junior
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) reached on an error. Another grounder put two outs in the book with Sagaities striding to the plate. The Bullet senior came through in the clutch, notching her only hit of the day to plate the pinch runner from third.
Lebanon Valley threatened to send the game into extras or reverse the outcome entirely by notching a pair of singles to lead off the inning, but Rubino retired each of the final three batters, including striking out the pitcher, to earn her fourth shutout this spring.
Rubino improved to 5-1 on the season by allowing just four hits, hitting one batter, and striking out four over seven innings. Sagaities, Miller,
Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville), and
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) accounted for Gettysburg's four hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Bullets struggled to manufacture any offense against freshman Valeria Malizzia as Lebanon Valley's first-year allowed only one unearned run, three hits, and one walk, while striking out 14 in seven innings. Yannotta accounted for two of the visitor's hits, doubling to lead off the second and singling to lead off the fourth. She scored the first run of the game in the former inning, coming around on an error by the first baseman. Following Yannotta's lead-off single in the fourth, Malizzia retired each of the final 12 batters, including six by strikeout.
The Dutchmen didn't muster much of an offensive attack either, plating one run in the third and fourth innings on only one hit. The first run came via three walks and a passed ball, while the second run was the result of an RBI single by Katie DeJulio following two walks and a wild pitch. It was enough to secure the win for Malizzia, who moved to 4-1 on the year.
Junior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took the loss in the opener after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and seven walks, while striking out four. Freshman
Alyssa Karl (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) tossed the final two frames for Gettysburg, allowing just one hit and walking two. Yannotta finished 2-for-3, while freshman
Casey Bialek (Glenville, Pa./South Western) recorded the other hit for the Bullets.
Gettysburg jumps right back into action tomorrow (March 27) with a non-conference doubleheader against Juniata College at 3 p.m. at Bobby Jones Field.
