HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 2008 Centennial Conference softball season did not start on a high note for Gettysburg College as the Bullets came up empty in a doubleheader at Haverford College. The Fords took the opener 7-2 and the nightcap 4-2, dropping Gettysburg to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in the CC.

Haverford (8-6, 2-0 CC) jumped on the board early the first game against Bullet hurler Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) as each of the first three batters reached base safely. Following a strikeout, the Fords plated the game's first two runs with a single and a bases-loaded walk. Rubino escaped any further damage in the inning by fanning the next two hitters.

The hosts continued to press the offense, plating a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings, the latter coming on a two-run home run by Alison Crawford. Gettysburg finally cracked the scoring column in the fifth as junior Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) singled, sophomore Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) walked, and senior Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) singled, loading the bases with no outs. Sophomore Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) drew a walk to bring in the first run and following a fielder's choice, senior Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) brought in Gettysburg's second run with another fielder's choice.

Haverford tallied another run in the sixth to set the final score. Rubino (5-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts, while Cassandra Searls (2-1) earned the win for the Fords.

After going down quietly in the first two frames of the second game, the Bullets lit the scoreboard in a big way in the third as Sagaities connected on a two-run blast, her first of the season and the 12th of her career. Unfortunately for the visitors, that was the extent of the offense in the nightcap as Becky Garibotto (2-2) retired the side in three of the final four innings, allowing only a pair of singles in the sixth.

Errors haunted Gettysburg in the contest as three of the Fords runs were unearned. Haverford notched its first run in the third after the No. 9 hitter reached via an error at third. Still trailing in the sixth, the hosts tied things up with three consecutive singles followed by a bases-loaded walk. The Bullets were nearly out of the inning after forcing a double play at home and first base, but the potential third out was squandered, allowing the game-winning runs to come around to score.

Junior Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took the loss, despite allowing just one unearned run and striking out nine.

Kempski finished a productive afternoon at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and an RBI. Sagaities posted three hits in seven at bats with a pair of runs, while junior Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) tallied a pair of hits on the day.

The Bullets turn right back around for another CC doubleheader at home against Muhlenberg College on Sunday, March 30, at 1 p.m.
