GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) and sophomore Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) pitched 12 scoreless innings and allowed only five hits combined against visiting Muhlenberg College to lead the Gettysburg College softball team to its first Centennial Conference victories of the 2008 season. The Bullets won the opener 2-0 and closed out the sweep with a quick 8-0 decision in the nightcap.

One day removed from her worst outing of the season, Rubino tossed seven shutout innings and struck out eight in the opener with Muhlenberg (5-13, 2-2 CC). The Mules' best chance to score came in the fifth when Michelle Consiglio and Katie Smithson each reached base to lead off the inning. That was the extent of the threat as Rubino fanned the next two hitters before getting a fly out to right field.

Gettysburg (10-6, 2-2 CC) managed only three hits in the opening four frames against Lara Kestenbaum (3-4), but finally struck pay-dirt in the fifth. Freshman Casey Bialek (Glenville, Pa./South Western) singled to lead off the inning and made her way around to third following a pair of ground outs. Junior Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) cashed in with the runner in scoring position, singling up the middle to score Bialek. After a walk to Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Yannotta came around to score on a single by Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) to set the final score.

Yannotta and Woodbury each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, the former adding a run and a double.

The Bullet bats came to life in the second game, knocking in eight runs in the first three innings. Senior Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) put the wheels in motion with a lead-off triple and scored on a long double by junior Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) to left. Yannotta followed with another double to plate Ober, and Miller brought her around with a double down the right-field line. After two fly outs and two walks, Kestenbaum returned to the mound for Muhlenberg. Bialek welcomed her back to the field by drawing a bases-loaded walk to cap the first-inning offensive output.

Sophomore Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) knocked in both runs in the second inning with a two-out, two-run single, while Ober and Miller notched RBI in the third frame.

Muhlenberg had no answer at the plate as McCullough allowed only a lead-off single in the fourth and two walks, while striking out seven to earn her fourth victory and second shutout of 2008.

Ober finished 2-for-3 at the dish with one run and two RBI. Ober and Yannotta paved the way with three hits over the two-game set as the Bullet shortstop finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI in the nightcap. Miller went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in game two, while Sagaities was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Next up for the Bullets is a non-conference doubleheader against Messiah College on Tuesday, April 1, at Bobby Jones Field at 3 p.m.
