GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) made sure her team got off on the right foot by blasting a first-inning solo home run and doubling in a pair of runs in the second as the Gettysburg College softball team earned a split with visiting Washington (Md.) College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field on Saturday. The Shorewomen scored the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh inning to win the opener 4-3, while the Bullets nailed down a 7-6 victory in the nightcap.

Ober put Gettysburg (11-10, 3-5 CC) on the board in the second game by nailing a shot to centerfield. The ball connected with the top of the outfield fence, but took a lucky bounce to the outside for the Bullet junior's second homer of the season. Gettysburg tacked on another run in the opening inning as junior Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) doubled and came around to score on a single which caromed off the pitcher by junior Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg).

The hosts added four more runs in the second inning, all coming with two outs on the board. With two runners on, Ober slammed a high pitch to the gap in left-center to clear the bags. Yannotta brought in Ober with a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw home. Senior Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) plated the final run by knocking a hot shot which tipped off the third baseman's glove and allowed Yannotta to come home.

Sophomore Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) worked herself into a jam in the third inning with two opening walks and an error. The Bears cashed in with a pair of run-scoring singles by Meghan Russell and Emily Adams and a pair of RBI ground outs to close the gap to 6-4.

Washington loaded the bases to start the fifth inning as well with three consecutive singles. A grounder to shortstop eliminated the runner at home, but Amanda Campbell drew a walk to bring in a run. Following a strikeout by McCullough, Becca Nicely singled in the game-tying run.

The Bullets answered right back in the bottom half of the frame as Miller singled sharply to left. She took advantage of a lackadaisical effort by the catcher to retrieve a wild pitch, advancing all the way to third and setting up Wallick for an RBI opportunity, which she took advantage of with a grounder to short.

Ober finished 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, while Yannotta and Miller each went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Yannotta also scored twice and Wallick came up with two RBI.

McCullough (5-4) picked up the win in the nightcap after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

The opener was scoreless through the first three innings until each side plated a run in the fourth. Washington pitcher Emily Adams chipped in on both counts, singling in the Shorewomen's first run and tossing a wild pitch with a runner on third to put Gettysburg on the board.

Washington picked up two more runs in the fifth inning, but the Bullets came right back to tie the game with two runs in the sixth on an RBI ground out by freshman Casey Bialek (Glenville, Pa./South Western) and a run-scoring single by senior Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).

With two outs in the board in the seventh inning, the Shorewomen picked up the go-ahead run as Adams doubled to left to plate Kim Proctor all the way from first. Yannotta singled to lead off the Bullet seventh, but Adams retired the final three batters to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Junior Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) took the loss in the opener after giving up four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Sagaities and Yannotta each finished 2-for-4, while sophomore Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) was 2-for-3 with a run.

Gettysburg turns right back around tomorrow with a road trip to Swarthmore College for a conference twinbill. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
