SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) became the first pitcher in school history and just the third in the history of the Centennial Conference to reach 400 career strikeouts, but it wasn't enough to push the Gettysburg College softball team to a win as host Swarthmore College swept the Bullets 4-2 and 8-0 on Saturday.
Rubino reached the milestone in a relief appearance in the second game. After ending the third inning with a strikeout to reach 399, she fanned Kathryn Riley for the first out in the fourth inning. Rubino posted a combined six strikeouts over the doubleheader and now has 402 for her career. Already Gettysburg's all-time leader, she trails only Erin Skinner (Ursinus '05, 423) and current Bullet head coach Samantha Abrams (McDaniel '04, 426) on the Centennial Conference's career list.
Rubino took the loss in the opener despite holding Swarthmore (17-9, 6-2 CC) off the scoreboard for five innings and allowing only a pair of singles over that time. Gettysburg (11-12, 3-7 CC) tallied the opening run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by junior
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and added to the lead with an run-scoring single by senior
Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) in the sixth.
Things went awry in the bottom of the sixth inning for Gettysburg with a pair of errors to start the frame. The Garnet took advantage, loading the bases on a walk and picking up a pair of two-run singles by Maggie Vizcarra and Michele Perch. Riley, the conference's leader in strikeouts, fanned a pair of Bullet batters in the seventh to improve her record to 13-4 this season.
Gettysburg put runners on base in every inning in the nightcap, including loading the bases with one out in the sixth inning. Wallick singled to lead off the sixth and sophomore
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) drew a walk. Following a strikeout, sophomore
Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled to load the bags. The visitors couldn't capitalize on the situation, however, as Riley, who entered in relief of Alexandra Zaleski (4-4), induced a fielder's choice at home and a grounder to third.
Swarthmore picked up four runs in the third inning to knock Bullet starter
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) from the game and added four runs off Rubino in the six to put the eight-run rule in effect.
Junior
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) went 2-for-5 with a double and a run in the twinbill, while Kempski finished 2-for-6. Senior
Heather Sagaities (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) reached base three times via a walk, hit by pitch, and a single and score one run.
Next up for Gettysburg is a conference doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m.
