GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In a rematch of the 2007 Centennial Conference Championship, Ursinus College showed Gettysburg College how potent its pitching staff has been this season by handing the host Bullets a pair of 5-0 setbacks on Saturday at Bobby Jones Field. The Bears strengthened their hold on the top spot in the conference by improving their record to 25-8 overall and 12-2 in the Centennial, while Gettysburg fell out of playoff contention and is now 13-14 overall and 5-9 in league play.

Ursinus sophomore Lauren Davis, who recently broke the conference's single-season strikeout record, tossed both ends of the doubleheader to extend her shutout streak to 33 1/3 innings. She allowed only six Bullet hits while striking out 24 en route to improving to 21-4 overall this season.

After a quiet first inning in the opener, Ursinus plated three runs in its second at bat with RBI doubles by Lindsay Schmidt and Jennie Moore and a fielder's choice by Erin McHugh. Gettysburg put its lead-off hitter on base in each of its next two at bats, but to no avail as Davis fanned four Bullet batters over the two innings.

The Bears tacked on another pair of runs in the fifth on a double by Sarah Hennessey. The Bullets threatened in the home half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs on singles by sophomores Ali Iacobucci (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and an error by the short stop. Gettysburg failed to capitalize on the situation as Davis fanned two hitters sandwiched around a fielder's choice at home.

Junior Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) took the loss in the first game to fall to 7-7 on the year. She gave up five earned runs, nine hits, and two walks while striking out six. Sophomore Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) led the way offensively with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

In the nightcap, Davis proved even more dominant with only one hit and 14 strikeouts over seven innings, tying the Centennial's single-game record for whiffs in a game. The Bullets' only hit came in the form of a bloop single by Kempski in the third inning.

Ursinus took advantage of eight walks by Gettysburg starter Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) to score two runs in the third inning and three in the sixth. Freshman Alyssa Karl (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) pitched effectively in relief of McCullough, stranding all the ducks on the pond in the sixth and allowing only one walk in 1.1 innings of work.

Schmidt led Ursinus with four hits over the twinbill, including a 3-for-3 effort in game one. Erin McHugh went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI in the opener, while Kaitlyn Sutherland went 2-for-3 with two RBI in game two.

Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference doubleheader at home against Salisbury University on Tuesday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m.
