GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Dickinson College plated four runs in the seventh inning of its second game against Gettysburg College to pull out a 6-5 victory and sweep the Bullets in a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Red Devils took the opener 4-1, dropping Gettysburg to 10-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
The Bullets started strong in the nightcap, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by senior
Abbe Miller (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) in the opening frame. Dickinson (17-9, 5-1 CC) came right back with a pair of unearned runs in the second to pull ahead by one.
Miller provided more fireworks in the home half of the third inning by smashing the first offering she saw from Liz Barry over the fence in left-center to plate three more runs and put Gettysburg back in front 4-2. The hosts added another run in the fifth as
Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) tripled to the gap in right-center and came around to score on a ground out by
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park). Miller immediately followed with a triple to right, but she was stranded at third as Barry induced
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) into a pop up to second base.
After cruising through the fifth and sixth innings, Bullet pitcher
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) hit a snag in the seventh. Two singles and a walk to start the inning loaded the bases for Dickinson's most potent home run threat, Emma Murtaugh. The Red Devil first-year stroked a long double to left to clear the bases and knot the game at 5-5. McCullough nearly escaped the inning without further damage with a strikeout and ground out, but Alesha Sisco tripled to right-center to plate the go-ahead run.
Allison Jordan struck out the side in the seventh to pick up her second save of the season in relief of Barry, who improved to 6-6. McCullough (4-4) took the loss for Gettysburg after allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
The loss in the second game ruined an otherwise impressive performance by Miller, who finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle. She went 3-for-3 in the contest with her first triple and home run of the season, in addition to her team-best seventh double. Miller also scored once and drove in four runs. Ober scored three runs for the Bullets and was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Gettysburg didn't have much luck against Jordan in the opener as the Red Devil sophomore scattered five hits over seven innings to pick up her 11th victory of the season. She struck out eight in the game and did not walk a batter.
Dickinson notched the game's first runs in the second inning with a bases-loaded walk and ground out, but the Bullets cut the lead in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a lead-off error and run-scoring single by Wallick. Gettysburg threatened again in the third with runners on second and third with two outs, but Jordan got the strikeout to close the inning.
The Red Devils added some insurance in the fifth as Kaitlyn McDonald sent a long drive over the fence in the left to plate a pair of runs. That longball set a Dickinson team record for home runs in a single season with eight, breaking the mark of seven set just last spring.
Junior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) fell to 6-4 this season after giving up six hits and four runs, while striking out six for Gettysburg.
Gettysburg looks to bounce back with another home Centennial doubleheader against Washington (Md.) College this Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
