WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg scored the first five goals of the game, then held off a McDaniel rally as the No. 2-ranked Bullets topped the Green Terror 9-7 in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
Gettysburg (10-1, 5-0 CC), which received four goals from sophomore Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), remained atop the conference standings while keeping its perfect Centennial record intact. The Bullets have now won their last 12 regular-season conference games, dating back to last season.
Brody has now scored nine goals in his last two games and has registered a hat trick in nine of 11 outings this year. Sophomore Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) notched his first career hat trick for Gettysburg, punching in three goals, while junior Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) tied a career-high with three assists. Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) added two assists for the Bullets.
Gibbs Preston led McDaniel (4-7, 0-5 CC) with three goals and an assist while Mike Hatton scored a pair of goals.
Junior Zachary Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) made 12 saves in goal for the Bullets while Kenny McHugh stopped nine shots for the Green Terror.
Junior Danny Collura (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) started Gettysburg's early run when he scored off a Duckworth pass 3:11 into the game. McGrath followed up with back-to-back unassisted tallies 10 minutes apart to make it a 3-0 game at the end of the first quarter. He scored his first goal with 10:47 on the clock, then converted again 30 seconds before the end of the stanza.
Furshman turned aside all five shots he saw in the opening quarter.
Pucci set up each of the Bullets' next two goals, assisting on Brody's first tally during a man-up opportunity 40 seconds into the second quarter before starting a Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep (Md.)) goal that made it 5-0 with 10:35 on the clock.
Preston put the Green Terror on the scoreboard at the 8:18 mark of the opening half before Brody answered off a pass from junior Tom O'Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College), giving the Bullets a 6-1 lead with 5:12 to go.
McDaniel closed the half strong, however, getting goals from Corey Nellisen and Tim Sieger to cut the deficit to 6-3 at the half.
McGrath potted his third goal of the game 3:33 into the second half to make it 7-3 before the Terror answered with a pair of quick goals to draw to within two. Mike Hatton scored unassisted with 7:11 on the clock, and after McDaniel won the face-off, Preston struck again nine seconds later to make it a 7-5 game.
Brody stopped the run for the Bullets, scoring with 4:24 showing to give his team an 8-5 advantage heading into the final quarter, then cashed in for the fourth and final time 2:47 into the final period off another Pucci assist. However, McDaniel blanked Gettysburg the rest of the way, and Hatton's second goal drew the Green Terror to within 9-6 with 6:16 left. But that was all the Green Terror would muster, as Preston scored with three seconds left to set the final tally.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when it hosts Ursinus College at 1 p.m.
