CLINTON, N.Y. – For the first time in three seasons, the Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team will not be taking the field on the final weekend of the NCAA Division III Tournament as seventh-ranked Middlebury College downed the fifth-ranked Bullets 14-5 in the regional semifinals hosted by Hamilton College on Saturday. The Panthers, who avenged a regular season overtime loss to the Orange & Blue, advance to play host Hamilton in the regional finale on Sunday (May 11), while Gettysburg sees its season come to a close with a 17-4 overall record.
After falling 19-17 in overtime at Clark Field back on March 27, Middlebury (12-4) wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard with the game's initial tallies at 27:00 and 25:39 by Mimi Schatz and Lindsay McBride, respectively. Gettysburg answered with back-to-back scores of its own as the senior duo of
Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and
Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) answered the call to knot the game at the midway point of the first half, the former goal coming via a pass from senior
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien).
That would be the last tie in the contest as the Panthers quickly retaliated with three scores from 12:58 to 10:24 before Sally Ryan polished off a four-goal run at 1:39, giving Middlebury a 6-2 cushion. Sophomore
Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) picked up the final tally of the opening period via another Ceglarski assist with 52 ticks on the clock to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Browning pulled the Bullets to within 6-4 with her second goal to open the final stanza at 27:11 off a
Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) assist, but Middlebury's defense clamped down over the remainder of the contest, allowing Gettysburg only seven shots total in the final 30 minutes. The Panther offense, meanwhile, reeled off eight unanswered goals over an 18-minute stretch to push the advantage to an insurmountable 14-4. Senior
Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) finally put the Bullets on the board with her second goal of the season with just over one minute remaining in the contest.
In the first meeting with Middlebury, Gettysburg managed 39 shots, won 22 draws, and forced the Panthers into 29 turnovers. Saturday's contest was not as favorable for the Bullets as Middlebury took nine more shots (27-18), won 13 of 21 draws, and committed only 18 turnovers.
Ceglarski's two assists gave her 51 helpers and 95 points for the season – the fourth and fifth-highest single-season totals in school history, respectively. She also closed her career with 266 points and 123 assists, ranking her fourth and second all-time at Gettysburg, respectively. Ceglarski added two draw controls in the game and a caused turnover as well.
Moore and sophomore
Nicole Ditillo (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) each corralled a pair of draw controls, while Gates managed three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior
Sam Pyzik (Westminster, Md./Mercy) led the Bullets with five ground balls. Sophomore goalie
Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made eight saves in the loss.
Five Panthers tossed in at least two goals, led by McBride with four. She also tallied an assist for a game-high five points. Schatz and Chase Delano each notched two goals and two assists for five points. Reid Berrien and Ryan led the way on draw controls with four and three, respectively. Blair Bowie picked up the win for Middlebury after making five stops in the goal.
