HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore Annie Marosits (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored the game-winning goal 4:45 into overtime, vaulting the Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 4-3 victory at Eastern Mennonite University in the Bullets season opener Friday afternoon.
It was the first collegiate game-winner for Marosits, who gave Gettysburg its fifth-straight season-opening win. Her goal was set up by an assist from senior Emily Harwood.
Neither team led by more than one goal in the back-and-forth affair.
Junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) tied her career-high with two goals for the Bullets while senior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) added one goal and one assist.
Making her first collegiate start, junior Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) made four saves to earn her first career win.
Alyssa Derstine put the Royals on top on a penalty stroke just 5:13 into the game. However, with 10:22 left in the half, Ruth pulled the Bullets even with an unassisted goal before setting up Hearn with only 1:38 showing. Gettysburg took a 2-1 lead into the intermission and would not trail the rest of the way.
The Royals tied it up just 33 seconds into the second half, but Hearn made it 3-2 with her second goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 21:56 showing. Allison Byler forced OT when she scored with 19:46 left.
Becky Nolt stopped eight shots for the Royals.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits York (Pa.) College in another non-conference outing.
