Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) scored late in the first half and classmate Anne Ritter (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) added a penalty-stroke goal with 9:12 left in the game as No. 20-ranked Gettysburg used an stellar defensive effort to upset No. 13 Christopher Newport 2-0 in a non-conference field hockey showdown Saturday afternoon in Virginia.

Gettysburg, 4-0 for the first time since 1999, out-shot the Captains 15-8. However, Gettysburg's back row did an outstanding job of limiting the number of Christopher Newport's quality shots, as only one of the Captains hits were on goal. The Bullets avenged a 4-0 loss to CNU (1-2) from a year ago.

The Bullets first goal was preceded by a key defensive stand earlier in the half. Midway through the period, the Captains were awarded six consecutive penalty corners over a 3:52 stretch, but Gettysburg allowed only one shot during the span. Then with just under five minutes on the clock, the Bullets took their first shots since the 10-minute mark. Juniors Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) each had a pair of shots sail wide before Ruth fired in an unassisted goal with 3:38 left in the half and 10 seconds after Emala's hit.

Ruth's goal was the 24th of her career, as she moved into a tie with Beth Curry '88 for 10th on the school's career list.

The Bullets out-shot the Captains 6-3 in the opening half, but CNU held a 7-6 edge in corners. However, it was all Gettysburg in the second half, as the Bullets recorded a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 surplus in corners.

Ritter gave the Bullets some breathing room, drilling in her fourth collegiate goal and her second career penalty-stroke tally to set the final score.

Junior goalie Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) made one save to post her second shutout of the season.

The Bullets conclude their southern excursion on Sunday, when they visit Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
