GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Emily Miller scored three goals and No. 8-ranked Johns Hopkins handed No. 15 Gettysburg its first loss of the season, edging the Bullets 3-2 in the Centennial Conference field hockey opener for both teams at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Friday afternoon.
Both teams came into the game undefeated, and the Blue Jays kept their perfect record intact, improving to 7-0 and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Bullets fell to 5-1 and 0-1 in conference play.
Miller, who came into the game with a team-leading seven goals, put her team on the scoreboard just 1:25 into the contest, taking a right-side pass from Andrea Vandersall and scoring in front of the goal. The Blue Jays would not trail the rest of the way.
Senior
Emily Harwood (Rockville, Md./Magruder) pulled the Bullets even five and a half minutes later. Junior
Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) set up the goal with a pass from the right baseline, and Harwood accepted the ball in the middle-front of the box before depositing her fifth tally of the season.
The rest of the half went back and forth, but neither side was able to generate many scoring opportunities. The two teams went into halftime intermission with the scoreboard reading 1-1 after taking three shots apiece.
Miller, a 2007 All-American, gave the Jays the lead for good 4:21 into the second half, when she took a pass from Catie Farow, slipped behind the goalie, and punched in a shot from the left side. She completed her hat trick with 27:59 on the clock, grabbing a steal and sending in a backhanded blast from the top of the circle.
The Bullets made it a one-goal game when senior
Savannah Ruth (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) tipped in a long shot from junior
Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) with 27:00 to go for her seventh goal of the year. Her goal was also the 25th of her career, as she moved into 10th on the school's all-time list.
Gettysburg was unable to muster a shot the rest of the way, but its defense kept it close down the stretch, withstanding five consecutive corners over a two-and-a-half minute stretch. Junior
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) also made a pair of saves inside the final 12 minutes.
Anderson finished the game with three saves while Sophia Tieu stopped two shots for the Blue Jays.
Gettysburg plays its second straight top-10 opponent on Wednesday, when it hosts No. 4 Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference outing at 4 p.m.
