Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Junior
Ryan Peiffer (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored his first goal of the season in the first half to lead visiting Gettysburg College to a 1-0 victory over Ursinus College in the Centennial Confernece opener for both teams. Senior
Jeff Greenlaw (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Bullets (3-2-2) to earn his second shutout of 2008.
Gettysburg and Ursinus (4-3-0, 0-1-0 CC) played about as evenly as it could get in Saturday's match with the visitors holding a slight edge in shots (11-10) in addition to accounting for all five corner kicks.
In such a tight-knit affair, it only took one good strike to settle the score and Peiffer provided that lift with his first goal of the season. Junior
Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) crossed a pass to the middle of the field where Peiffer's aim was true, putting the Bullets up 1-0 at 26:26.
Gettysburg continued to threaten in the second half with six shots, but three of those attempts were turned away by goalkeeper Michael Alfieri. The Bears managed only one shot on goal in the second period which was saved by Greenlaw, one of his three on the night.
Senior
Chris Bayon (Langhorne, Pa./Lawrenceville School (N.J.)) paced the Bullets' attack with three shots, while Menge and Peiffer each took a pair of attempts.
Gettysburg returns to its non-conference schedule for its next affair, a home tilt against Eastern University on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m.
