GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team came out strong in its Centennial Conference opener against Bryn Mawr College with a sweep, but once-beaten St. Mary's (Md.) College ended the Bullets' celebration with a dramatic five-set victory as part of a tri-match inside Bream Gym on Saturday.
Gettysburg (7-6) wrapped things up in less than an hour against Bryn Mawr (7-5), downing the Owls by scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-12. Sophomore
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) led the attack with eight and seven kills, respectively, while junior
Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) notched five. Yoder was strong on the defensive side of the net as well, posting a team-high four blocks. Despite playing in only two sets, junior setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) led the squad with 11 digs and 14 assists, while junior libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) totaled nine digs.
After downing Bryn Mawr 25-7, 25-21, and 25-14, St. Mary's (11-1) needed every ounce of strength to muster past Gettysburg in a back-and-forth five-set match to end the day. The Seahawks dominated the opener 25-13, but Gettysburg bounced back to edge out the visitors 25-23 in the second frame. The squads exchanged 25-20 victories in sets three and four to set up the decisive final set. Each point was hard-earned as the teams traded blows back and forth until St. Mary's got the upper-hand 14-13 and scored the clinching kill. The five-set setback was the third this fall for Gettysburg.
Hogan continued a career-day with 16 kills against the Seahawks, while Yoder and senior
Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) each pounded down nine. Krampf paced the team in digs once again with 15 and tallied 28 assists. Rickabaugh notched seven kills and 14 digs and Kotewicz and freshman
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) each came up with 13 digs.
Next up for Gettysburg is a key match with two-time defending Centennial Conference champion and No. 19 Haverford College (12-2, 1-0 CC) on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Gooding Arena at Haverford.
