HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) pounded down 15 kills as the Gettysburg College volleyball team made a statement on Wednesday night in its Centennial Conference match at 18th-ranked Haverford College with a surprise three-game sweep of the two-time defending conference champions. The Bullets won the contest 25-23, 25-22, and 25-21 and improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the CC.
Gettysburg had dropped four-straight matches to Haverford (12-3, 1-1 CC) entering Wednesday night, but the Bullets quickly reversed the trend with their first victory over a ranked opponent in four years. Both the first and third sets saw the hosts grab early leads, but in each instance the visitors came back with runs of six and eight points, respectively, to seal victories. Gettysburg led by as many as 10 in the second set before holding off a late Ford rally.
As a team, the Bullets managed their second-best attack percentage of the season by knocking down 29.5 percent of their attempts. Yoder was one off her career high for kills and made only three errors in 25 attempts (.480 attack percentage). Junior
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) nailed seven of 11 kills attempts (.636 attack percentage), while junior setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) came up with eight kills against just one error in 16 attempts (.438 attack percentage). Senior
Meghan McConville (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and freshman
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) each tallied six kills.
Krampf posted 34 assists and was among the defensive leaders with 13 digs. Junior
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) paced the team with 15 digs, while freshman
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) contributed 10 digs and two service aces. Yoder was a force on defense as well with three total blocks.
Gettysburg will travel to Salisbury, Md., this weekend to compete in the Salisbury University Tournament on Sept. 26-27. The Bullets will face SUNY New Paltz on Friday at 6 p.m. and close the first day against the hosts at 8 p.m.
